Fitness Department Mission Statement

The Fitness Department is a vital part of the Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois. Guided by Christian principles we seek to enhance the well-being of participants and to encourage the achievement of personal goals through programs that are fun, educational and diverse.

Floor Exercise

Abdominal Blast

Start or finish your early morning workout with some great abdominal work. 10 minutes of intense ab work followed by 5 minutes of stretching. Free for everyone.

Basic Step

Get a great workout and learn the fundamentals of Step. Free for YMCA members.

Beginning Yoga

If your doctor has suggested that you try Yoga, or if you have been interested but think you are not flexible enough, this class is for you.

Cardio Chisel

Keep your heart rate elevated in this interval-style class of blended cardio, strength and endurance exercises. Great way to build muscle, stamina, and coordination.

Core Crunch Lunch

Join us for a 30 minute lunch performing an assortment of ab, back and glute exercises to strengthen your core.

Fit for Life

Variety packed, easy cardio choreography combined with strength work and stretching. Modifications offered for beginners through intermediate fitness levels. So much fun, you may never want to leave. Free for YMCA members.

Gentle Stretch

This class will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing Yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement.

Get up and Go

Enjoy this aerobic class that is safe, heart healthy and easy on the joints. The workout includes low impact movements, upper body strength, abdominal conditioning, stretching and relaxation exercise designed to energize your active lifestyle. Free for YMCA members.

Group Cycling

Designed for individuals of all fitness levels, interested in a dynamic, cardiovascular workout. Offered at many convenient times.

Intro to Cycling

Interested in Group Cycling but afraid to try?  This class will teach the basics of cycling in a fun, low key environment.  Suitable for all fitness levels.  Free for YMCA members.

Pilates Plus

Pilates is a class that combines core control and strengthening exercises designed to work the entire body in fluid movements.

SilverSneakers® 1

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Handheld weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support. Free for YMCA members.

SilverSneakers® Cardio Circuit

Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout.  Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a SilverSneaker ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography.  A chair is offered for support, stretching, and relaxation exercises.  Free for YMCA members.

Step Challenge

This fun, low impact and high intensity cardiovascular workout uses adjustable Reebok steps to accommodate all fitness levels.

Stretch

Program designed for any age and fitness level. Gentle but thorough stretching will enable participants to increase their range of motion, enhance other fitness programs, help prevent injury and reduce the affects of Arthritis.

The Body Workshop

Incorporate all major muscle groups into a 45 minute class. Use a variety of equipment including weights, balls, tubes, chairs, mats, steps, paper plates, and good ol’ fashioned body weight and gravity to provide a challenging strength and endurance workout.

Yoga

This class combines gentle, progressive stretching with other body awareness movements and relaxation techniques. Gentle, repetitive movements unlock tight muscles and release tension. These moves teach you to take control of your body and well-being, while leaving you relaxed and energized.

Zumba Dance

Join us for one of the newest and hottest fitness classes around. Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music dance themes creating a dynamic, exciting and effective fitness workout.

Zumba Basic for Beginners

If you are interested in moving to music in an easy and fun environment, this class is for you.  One genre of music will be the focus of choreography each week.  The steps will be broken down so they will be very easy to learn and enjoy.

Zumba Blend

This class combines the best of Zumba Dance and toning in one action packed hour.

Aquarobics

This cardiovascular water workout is a low impact yet invigorating and effective way to burn calories and tone your muscles.

Aqua Exercise

Improve cardiovascular endurance and tone the entire body through aerobic exercise and stretching all in the water. A medium intensity class which incorporates music to provide a great workout for all fitness levels.

Aqua Jogging

Use floatation equipment to “jog” in the water with little to no impact on the knees and hips. Free for YMCA members.

Aqua Kickboxing

This is an energizing, powerful class that will effectively burn calories and tone your muscles. An extremely intense and effective workout.

Aqua Sizzle

Shake, shimmy and sizzle in the water as we create some heat.  Aqua Sizzle is a safe, effective and challenging water-based workout for any fitness level. Music will include Latin based rhythms among others.

Wet Workout

Take advantage of the water’s natural resistance to improve flexibility and range of motion and relieve muscle tension. Low to no impact on joints – a great way to start off and get used to moving in the water. The class takes place in the shallow end only, so non-swimmers are always welcome.

Total Body Strength and Agility Training

Regardless of your fitness level, this new specialty class will challenge your  muscular and cardiovascular systems through a combination of time tested exercises to maximize metabolic burn and increase strength, agility and cardio output.  Limited class size allows personalized coaching, weekly progress tracking and customized support to help you succeed in your fitness goals!  Min. 6, max. 10. 

Blast the Fat

A dynamic workout using plyometrics, martial arts, weights, and other fitness equipment to build strength, burn fat, and reshape the body.

Small Group Personal Training

Tween Basic Training

This 45 minute class will have the kids moving, pushing, pulling, jogging and sweating just like you.  This class is designed for kids ages 13 and up.  All workouts will be modified to each child's fitness level and ability with the intention of improving their self confidence and self esteem.  Class will be held outside unless otherwise notified.  Min. 8, max. 10.

Specialty Programs

Tae Kwon Do

This Korean Martial Art will increase your self confidence and physical stamina. Multiple instructors with rankings as high as 5th degree Black Belt will teach proper kicking, punching, and self defense techniques. This class will reward you with knowledge and confidence outside the training hall as well. Strength is not important, but concentration and discipline is required. For ages 8 years and up. Tue/Thurs 6:30 - 8 PM Auxiliary Gym
